For this week’s “5 Minutes With” we chatted with Sonny Vu, founder of Misfit Wearables. Misfit is an award-winning wearable and smart-home products company. Previous ventures included founding companies like AgaMatrix and FireSpout. Sonny has a deep love of language, resulting in him earning a PhD in Linguistics, whilst working with Noam Chomsky!

Favourite day ever at work?

A recent favorite day was three weeks ago when we had an awesome leadership team meeting where 1) everyone was there (rare), 2) everyone was energised and in agreement about a major initiative we were contemplating, and 3) I felt everyone trusted and liked each other. 3) was always something I said would be the hallmark of a team on its way to success.

What was your first job?

I worked at a firework stand underage in 7th grade.

What 3 things would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?

Significant increase in global awareness of the Misfit brand. Excellent execution of a new initiative we’ve been contemplating. A leadership team that trusts and likes each other more than ever before.

What is your favourite Misfit Wearables product?

The Misfit Bolt – beautiful, super easy to use, and really useful.

What’s coming next in wearables and smart home products?

For wearables: More compelling use cases (stuff we might finally turn around for if we left our wearable at home). For smart home: Products are actually usable by the general public and not just alpha geeks.

Don’t miss Sonny speaking at RISE in HK. See you guys there. Check out last week’s “5 Minutes With” Jenny Lee.
